It's safe to say people are cooking at home now more than ever. During the height of the pandemic, many activities moved to Zoom video conferencing and many world-class chefs to locals in Italy went online to teach virtual cooking courses. While that’s slowly changing with some starting to offer in-person classes, there’s still a lot of online cooking happening. The best part is, there’s a class for everyone, including interactive, kid-friendly, baking and more. Whether your cookware gets heavy use in the kitchen making recipes like pasta primavera or you need to dust off your bakeware to make lemon pudding cake, there’s a class for total beginners in the kitchen to advanced cooks who have more time on their hands. MasterClass

An annual MasterClass membership is the best way to learn cooking skills from some of the world’s best chefs. Each class—from the likes of Alice Waters, Gordon Ramsay and Dominique Ansel—consists of about a dozen or so pre-recorded videos that range from 10-30 minutes so you can learn at your own pace. Airbnb Online Experiences

Airbnb moved many of its in-person cooking experiences online in April 2020, so that its hosts could continue to earn an income and people could learn new skills while in quarantine. There are several dozen online cooking classes with hosts in over 30 countries that take place via Zoom and can be booked on the site. For example, you can learn how to make handmade pasta with an Italian nonna, Swedish pastries with a professional baker in Stockholm or chicken tagine with a family in Morocco.

Sur La Table

Our Deputy Director of the Kitchen Appliances Lab, Nicole Papantoniou, was a kitchen assistant at Sur La Table years ago and to this day still uses some of the recipes — yes they’re that good! Because of this, we’re confident you’ll love whatever you make in Sur La Table’s cooking classes. They offer a wide variety of cooking classes from American Coastal Crab Cakes to Perfect Pad Thai. The best part? Their classes are live Zoom sessions to walk you through the entire cooking process step-by-step and since it’s interactive you can ask questions as you follow along. Each 90-120 minute class is led by an expert chef that provides instructions as well as helpful tips along the way ensuring you make a tasty dish.

Homemade

Not only was Joel Gamoran a national chef for Sur La Table for over 10 years but he also is a host for A&E’s hit series “Scraps” and has a cookbook called Cooking Scrappy, both of which focus on sustainable cooking. He has taken his love for cooking and launched his own business, Homemade, which offers completely free cooking classes, though sometimes a charitable donation is suggested. Classes such as Orange Morning Cinnamon Buns and Chicken Tagine With Harissa and Lemon are offered and these virtual cooking events are live so participants can engage with the chef and ask questions about their steak being cooked enough or if their caramel is the proper color.

Dynamite Shop

One of our testers and their 8-year-old child tried the Dynamite Shop Dinner Club and were huge fans. According to our tester, “the instructors are engaging, kind, funny, energetic and truly amazing communicators.” There are two instructors for each class, and one instructor does the cooking demo while the other keeps an eye out for questions or if anyone needs help. Our tester was also impressed with the diverse food options and some of their favorites meals were, Ramen and Iceberg Wedge Salad with Carrot-Ginger Dressing, Mediterranean Meze Spread with Baked Falafel, Lemon Tahini and Tabbouleh and Green Pozole and Mexican Chocolate Pudding. Each class meets once a week for 90 minutes.

Christina Tosi’s “Baking Club”

Sure you know how to cut an onion, but do you know how to make graham crackers from scratch? Christina Tosi, the pastry chef behind New York’s Milk Bar empire, is hosting live baking lessons at 2 p.m. ET each day on her Instagram to teach aspiring bakers some new skills. You’ll find recipes for inventive and fun baked goods like French toast muffins and popcorn cupcakes, as well as basics like lemon curd and soft pretzels. The live classes are archived in her IGTV channel and the written recipes are saved to christinatosi.com.

America’s Test Kitchen Cooking School

18 Reasons Why is a San Francisco nonprofit cooking school connected to the city’s famed Bi Rite Market. Normally, it offers nightly classes and dinners in person at its 18th Street classroom, in addition to providing free Cooking Matters classes to low-income adults, kids, and teens in the Bay Area. Instead of shutting down entirely, it moved its classes online so that small groups of up to 12 people can learn new cooking styles via Zoom. So far, there’s been classes on how to make Japanese comfort food, basic knife skills, and even a French crepes workshop for kids ages six and up. Traveling Spoon
